City briefs: Colfax Marathon to be May 18

Colfax Marathon runs through Lakewood - The 3rd Annual Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon takes off early Sunday morning May 18 as marathoners set out from Denver's City Park and race along Colfax Avenue. The full marathon will loop through Lakewood. North and south streets that cross Colfax from Sheridan to Simms will be closed to through traffic from 6-10a.m. Both southbound lanes on Simms will remain open, along with one northbound lane. Lakewood marathon spectators can expect plenty of entertainment along the route. At Casa Bonita, there will be mariachi bands, dancers and "Peace Pipe." Rockley Music is again party central, with "Jaysun Morgan's Bass Inc" and "The OTC Varmitz." Further west, "Matt Bassano's 1 Man Multi-instrumental Band", Doug Stackhouse and Mary Wagnerat will be performing at the Westland Town Center. Police Communications Center moves - The Lakewood Police Department's Communications Center has moved into the Public Safety Center Building. After several years of planning and remodeling, the multi-million dollar project has become a reality. The physical moving of the Communications Center began at 8:00 PM on Tuesday, May 6, and it was completed in a matter of hours.
Division Chief Michelle Tovrea said, "It has been a long process, but one that was well worth it. The move brings the many employees of the Communications Center back under the same roof with their coworkers at the Police Department."
Also in the new Communications Center is the City's new Emergency Operations Center or EOC. The EOC is staffed in cases of major emergencies such as unusual snowstorms, flooding, hazmat situations or multi jurisdictional events.

Neighborhood meeting schedule on proposed rezoning - The City of Lakewood has received an inquiry from Spectrum Residential Communities regarding the properties located at 8080 West Jewell Avenue. The property is zoned PD (Planned Development) to allow for a Christian Living Community and the applicant is proposing to rezone the properties to PD (Planned Development) to allow for an assisted living facility. The property owner is International Church of the Foursquare Gospel.
A meeting has been scheduled for citizens who have property in the vicinity to learn about this proposal and to have an opportunity to offer comments, suggestions and concerns. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 29 at 6:30p.m. at Bear Valley Church, Room 204, 10001 W. Jewell Avenue.

Battle of the Bear scheduled for Bear Creek Lake Park on Saturday - The Battle the Bear mountain bike race will challenge riders on Saturday, May 17, at Bear Creek Lake Park. The race will run throughout the day and will involve the majority of the natural surface trails in the park. The dirt trails will remain open to hikers, horseback riders and other bike riders. Please be courteous to the racers and use extra caution on the park roads and trails.

West Metro Fire Station 7 has grand opening - West Metro Fire Rescue will celebrate the grand opening of West Metro Fire Station 7 at 6315 W. Mississippi Avenue on Tuesday, May 20 from 6 - 7 p.m. Enjoy a hot dog dinner with West Metro's Fire Fighters for just $2. All proceeds from the event will go toward West Metro's Community Outreach Educational Programs.

CDOT offers "make-up" open house on Wadsworth/US 6 interchange - The Colorado Department of Transportation has scheduled a "make up" open house on the latest information regarding its study of improvements for the US6/Wadsworth Boulevard interchange and Wadsworth Boulevard. This will be the same information presented at the April 29 open house. The presentation is scheduled for those who were unable to attend that session. It will be held Wednesday, May 21, 5-7p.m. with the presentation at 6p.m.

Seniors get safety tips from Lakewood Police - The Clements Community Center - Volunteers of America (VOA) dining site has been host to monthly visits from the Lakewood Police Department who have been sharing Safety Tips for Seniors. Recently, diners met with SWAT officers and CSI officers for an inside look at how agents handle additional duties in these areas. This had been a fun and educational opportunity for those in attendance. Our citizens appreciate the opportunity to visit one on one with the officers.
The VOA dining site recently had groups visit from Arvada and Golden. The site is open to all Monday through Thursday and the first Friday of the month for lunch. Reservations must be made two business days in advance by calling 303-987-4833. Cost: Sixty years and older $2.50 contribution and those under sixty years of age a charge of $5.
