National legislative session held for retired feds
Contributed by: Ken Bowen on 4/9/2007

Ken Bowen, president of National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Lakewood Chapter 1085, joined 300 other members of NARFE for the 10th Biennial Legislative Leadership Conference held recently in our nation's capital.

Mr. Bowen said the conference is held at the beginning of each new Congress as an opportunity for NARFE activists and leaders from across the USA to gain insight from public policy experts and to have a dialogue with lawmakers about preserving the earned economic and health security of federal employees, annuitants and their survivors.

"The earned retirement and healthcare benefits of federal retirees are constantly under scrutiny as Congress looks for ways to reduce spending," Ken said. "Men and women who are at the local grassroots level of our legislative effort should understand what budget cuts and social security reform could mean to us. We then communicate our concerns and our votes to our representatives in the Congress."

Ken attended workshops on how to contact Congress, the US Budget, Social Security, Healthcare Issues and NARFE-PAC (the Association's Political Action Committee). He had ample time to learn from "Inside the Beltway" experts and by networking with fellow NARFE attendees from over 30 states.

Ken, with Martha Leiker, Colorado Federation President and Jack Powell, Federation Legislative Chairman, participated in "NARFE Lobby Day at the Capital.

"We visited the offices of Representatives Lamborn, Udall, and Perlmutter plus Senator Salazar and brought to each the message that all federal retirees ask is fairness and equity in protecting our earned retirement and health benefits. Congressman Perlmutter was in an important Committee hearing but he was able to step out into the hall to greet us and give 20 minutes of his valuable time to hear the NARFE points.

Ken Bowen is the President of the Lakewood NARFE Chapter 1085 and urges all federal employees and retirees to learn how NARFE works to protect their retirement security. For more information, the Web site is www.narfe.org.
