Bertolli eager to move on upon O'Dell's withdrawal
Contributed by: Rita Bertolli on 9/19/2007

After receiving notice of candidate Jack O'Dell's withdrawal from the Mayoral election, I commend Jack for his noble efforts to run for office and seek unity in Lakewood.

Jack raised some great issues in the short time he was campaigning. It's not easy to be involved in politics; Jack and I, as citizen activists seeking change in Lakewood, have faced great obstacles in campaigning against the big business dollars of our establishment opponent. Jack's supporters can count on my leadership from this day forward. Jack was a great contributor to the process. I now welcome the challenge of speaking directly to the citizens of Lakewood as the only otherleading candidate opposing establishment opponent Murphy in November's race. Jack gave citizens hope -- civic leaders can indeed pursue a life of service dedicated to the constituents they represent.

I wish Jack well in his future endeavors. I hope he and his supporters will now look towards supporting our Campaign for Change in the community. My door will always be open to Jack O'Dell and his supporters when I become the next Mayor of Lakewood.

A, I might agree on some level. But I do believe and the law supports that any landowner has the right to go through the process to request the zoning of his choice.

Rita, I am not 100% sure that anyone has a "right" to the zoning of their choice. How a place is zoned really is the province of the city as a whole. Certainly, the city cannot change the zoning without the consent of the landowner (unless the city compensates the landowner), but it is within the city's power to deny a zoning change. At this point, I do not know enough about the situation to determine whether this merits outrage.

Thanks Alan, I do like that, especially the R alliteration. Did you see the story I just posted on the R1A downzoning. Incredible. You've got to check out. It's an incredible violation of rights, and I couldn't write the whole story down.

Some thoughts. I think "Campaign for Change" is good. Nice alliteration, but there is a problem. Perhaps people in Lakewood want less change, or at least less change quickly. When you say "change", I know you mean change the council, but I am not sure your point will get across. Or, if you want to go for the irony: "Developing a Changing Lakewood" Or, for truthfulness (but too long: "Bob Murphy voted for the Carma exchange, did you?" If you choose this one, you can start to call him Bob "Carma" Murphy. Although it might be viewed as a negative, it might not be, as it is an entirely truthful statement and he will be running on his record, which would be to your advantage. Alliteration works well. Try to find something with an "R", "B" or "L" Livable Lakewood? Rita's Right (for Lakewood)? The last one is not that great if you and Joe are running together.

That's true! Quite the opposite in fact! What would you suggest? Maybe we'll just leave it at "Campaign for change."

Rita, The "People's Campaign"? Sounds like something Chairman Mao would come up with. Based upon your past activities, I think you are anything but a supporter of Mao.
