Teacher allegedly had relationship with students

Lakewood police detectives have arrested a 31-year-old substitute teacher who is also a coaching assistant from Lakewood High School.

Jon William McCarthy (07-09-76) was arrested May 2 at the school, 9700 W. 8th Ave., as detectives continued their investigation into allegations that McCarthy had inappropriate sexual contact with a juvenile female student. It is also believed that McCarthy may have had an inappropriate relationship with a former female student when she attended the school last year.

McCarthy is currently being interviewed by detectives and will at some point be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail. Most likely he will make his first court appearance sometime next week on charges of "sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust", as well as "sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust with a pattern."

Detectives began their investigation after rumors of the relationships surfaced at the school. Due to the nature of the charges and the juvenile status of the victims, no further details are available at this time.
