Police warn about wallet thefts at grocery stores

Lakewood Police Detectives are investigating a series of wallet thefts that have occurred mainly in supermarkets and grocery stores.

Since Feb. 1, there have been 17 reported cases of wallets being stolen from shopping carts as citizens shopped. In most cases, the victims were seniors and had left their wallets either in the shopping carts or in a purse that had been left in the cart.

Police advise shoppers to never leave their purses and wallets unattended in the cart while shopping. Ideally a purse should be held or hung on an arm or shoulder while in the store.

Lakewood police will be asking selected merchants to display a bulletin warning shoppers about the thefts. Anyone who feels they have been a victim of a similar case or may have information that could assist detectives with their investigation is asked to call the Lakewood Police Department at 303-987-7111.
