Jeffco Dems to hold annual dinner, silent auction

The public is invited to the Jefferson County Democrats' 33rd annual Eleanor Roosevelt Diner & Silent Auction on Sept. 16 at the Sheraton Denver West Hotel, 360 Union Boulevard, in Lakewood. The silent auction begins at 5 p.m., dinner is at 6:30 p.m.. The keynote speaker for the evening Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, U.S. Representative from South Dakota.

A reader of the Sioux Falls' Argus Leader recently said of Representative Sandlin, "I like the fact that she's . . . looking for ways to solve multiple problems at the same time. If more in Congress were as thoughtful and committed to solutions like Herseth Sandlin, they'd get a lot more done."1 This comment was in relation to an article discussing Rep.Herseth Sandlin's efforts to weigh the competing interests of farmers and environmentalists when helping to develop energy policy. We all need representatives who are willing and able to walk all the way around a problem, view it from all angles, and assess the effect a proposed solution will have on other issues.

Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin comes from a family where issues and solutions were likely dinner table conversation. Her grandfather, Ralph Herseth, was South Dakota's Governor. Her grandmother was the Secretary of State. Her father served in the legislature and was a nominee for Governor. Representative Herseth Sandlin is married to former U.S. Representative Max Sandlin of Texas.
As South Dakota's at-large Member of Congress, Rep. Herseth Sandlin serves on the Agriculture, Veteran's Affairs, and Natural Resources committees. She serves on the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. She was chosen for this committee because of her leadership on the issue of renewable biofuels. As if this was not more than enough to keep this amazing representative busy, she is co-chair of the Rural Working Group, and Chairwoman of the Veterans' Affairs subcommittee on Economic Opportunity. Come hear this amazing Democrat in action!

The Eleanor Award Honorees will be Kathy Glass and Carmah Lawler who are both human rights activists, GLBT Caucus members, and Jeffco Dems volunteers with a long history of helping to build better lives and giving a voice to people in need. Both have worked in the Child Welfare system in Denver. They also took part in the Statewide Commission for Redistribution of Funds for HIV/AIDS, distributing meals to AIDS victims for Angel Heart, and working for Rainbow Alley. They also volunteer at a Lakewood school with 73% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
