City council approves agreement with RTD
Contributed by: Erin Feese/YourHub.com on 1/17/2008

At the Lakewood City Council meeting Jan. 14, council approved Lakewood's Intergovermental Agreement with RTD (IGA) with a vote of 10-1. The agreement outlines what the city is expected to contribute to the light rail project.

The areas that the West Corridor will run through -- Lakewood, Golden, Denver and Jefferson County -- are expected to contribute a match of 2.5 percent of RTD's budget, or $15.9 million. Taking into consideration factors such as track mileage, number of stations and projected ridership, Lakewood's required contribution is $5.16 million.

The majority of this will be paid in staff time, drainage improvements in Richey Park and utility relocations. Only about $15,000 will be required as a cash obligation.

"The primary purpose of this agreement is to determine and document how the city is going to pay its share of the local agency contribution," said Lakewood City Attorney Tim Cox at the meeting. "It obligates RTD to make the improvements, build the project within Lakewood and discusses how the city is going to pay for its share."

Lakewood's share is locked in at $5.16 million regardless of any changes in light rail costs.

The West Corridor light rail line, which is a 12.1-mile light rail transit corridor between the Auraria Campus in downtown Denver and the Jefferson County Government Center in Golden, is expected to open in 2013. For more information, visit www.rtd-fastracks.com
