Defense of "Chilling News About Global Warming"
Contributed by: Aaron Brachfeld & Mary Choate on 2/28/2007

Chuck Bailey wrote in response to "Chilling News About Global Warming" ( http://denver.yourhub.com/Arvada/Stories/News/Nation-World/Story~254760.aspx): China and India are building 650 coal fired electric plants!! They will create more pollution than U.S. can reduce by kyoto agreements. chuck

Coastalfield's Defense:
Mr. Bailey, a single volcano can release more greenhouse gasses than all the world's nations combined. While 650 coal fired electric plants create more pollution than the US can reduce by the Kyoto Agreement, this is no reason to not reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses that the US produces. It is also not an argument against citizens taking private action (outside of their Federal Government's Kyoto Treaty) to reduce their greenhouse gasses. Please also remember that the principle danger facing the world today is not greenhouse gasses, but the decreasing biodiversity and biodensity, and the general collapse of biomes (such as coral reefs, forests, wetlands, etc.). The biosphere helps buffer the naturally fluxuating changes to the atmosphere. Our greatest power, as humans, is to work with these other forms of life to change our environment. And we must work with other life if we are to survive the coming ice age: the time to act is now, and there is plenty that every one can do...whether they are strong or weak, organized into nations or acting privately, young or old. We do not argue against coal power, Mr. Bailey, but do suggest signing up for wind power as an easy thing anyone can do to help the environment. There is no need to stop with signing up for wind power. If someone wanted to do much, much more for the environment, they would start farming as we do, buying up poorly managed land throughout the world, and profitably reclaim the land through farming while helping to stabilize the biosphere by increasing biodiversity and biodensity.
