Lakewood elects Bob Murphy as next mayor
Contributed by: YourHub.com on 11/6/2007

In a heated election that had the whole city talking, Lakewood politician Bob Murphy has narrowly defeated activist Rita Bertolli, according to the unofficial results.

"I'm very happy with the decision the voters of Lakewood have made," Murphy said. "I'm honored the citizens of Lakewood have chosen me to serve as mayor."

Despite allegations of sign-stealing, Murphy said he feels he led a positive campaign on the issues and that he "couldn't be happier" with how it went.

Although he has yet to work out the exact methodology, Murphy said he wants to get as many different people involved with the city as possible, including those who did not support him during the election.

"We want to reach out to everyone, including Rita herself, and everyone she represents, and we plan to start that as soon as we take office Nov. 26," Murphy said.

Murphy replaces term-limited Steve Burkholder.

Bertolli did not return phone calls for comment late Tuesday.

The third candidate for mayor, Linda Delay, said it was fun and interesting to be involved with the race, but she doesn't play to run for office again anytime soon.

"I think I'll be an active citizen for right now," she said. "The race was more geared toward Rita and Bob. They had the money to do fliers and create more publicity than me."

Delay said she became friendly with Bertolli during the race, because "we were on the same page on a lot of stuff."

I couldn't agree more that Bob Murphy had a positive campaign carried out with class and dignity. The citizens have spoken. It will be truly refreshing to move on and move forward.

Had I known Linda was so funny, I would've voted for her!! Lord knows Lakewood’s city council needs a sense of humor. And Mike Burns (his posts have since been deleted), I'm beginning to doubt your credibility as someone with stable mental faculties. You are, to put it succinctly, an irascible curmudgeon. You're despicable, your sense of taste is less than repulsive, you have no respect for others, far less so for Rita than she would even realize, you've been an embarrassment to YourHub, an awful supporter for your camp, no one likes you, and you’re essentially what the net would define as a troll. You flame those who disagree with you, extol those who flatter you, your responses have been derogatory, aggressive, hypocritical, at times hateful, offensive, racist, monotonous, simple-minded, and purposefully provoking. (Cont’d from above) You have reproached the very future of Lakewood, insulting teenagers who are bright enough to even care to read about the city they live in, much less those commenting matter-of-factly or writing articles about present issues. You’ve made direct and unfair accusations toward the education being provided at the schools of Lakewood. You have proven beyond anyone’s doubt your lack of faith in every man, woman, and child in Lakewood. You’ve done NOTHING but complain about the last 10 years of your life, and not once have I seen you raise a finger, beyond the pathetic blubbering of your typing skills, toward public supplication, and you seem to firmly believe this city and its citizens are as hopeless as your own life. I would have admired a post where you, admitting defeat, are still proud of the close race your camp ran against Murphy and that you are looking forward to the future of Lakewood and the contributions you have to offer to a fabulous Front Range city.
