The Philip J. Steele Gallery on the campus of Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design will feature a dual installation June 24 - July 30, 2005. The first exhibition features work by Katherine and Michael McCoy, Directors of Professional Programs at RMCAD, and includes the full range of furniture, interiors, products and graphic design work from this influential design couple over a 35 year career. It also includes several new, never-before design prototypes for furniture.
The exhibition includes ergonomic office chairs like the million-selling Bulldog Chair for Knoll, as well as limited production furniture like the Door Chair and the Incidence Coat Rack; interior designs for universities, design studios, executive offices and showrooms; books, magazines and posters for Cranbrook Academy of Art, Detroit Institute of Art, Rizzoli Press, the Hanover World¹s Fair, Simpson Paper Company and Chronicle Books, and electronic products for NEC and Philips.
The McCoys emphasize the bridging of the design disciplines and the melding of the worlds of science and poetics, form and content, and theory and practice in their teaching and their own work. Michael is recognized for his pioneering work in the meaning of form in furniture and products, and Katherine for the application of structuralism and post-structuralism in communications design.
Michael's industrial design practice has ranged from products and ergonomic furniture for Knoll, Philips, NEC and Artifort to highly conceptual limited production furniture. Katherine¹s graphic work for Cranbrook, Rizzoli and Chronicle Books has focused on poster, magazine and book design. In their metaphorical interiors and exhibition design, communications content links their interests in objects, spaces and media.
Their design work has earned the McCoys over two hundred national and international awards. For their influence on design thinking they have received the Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design, the IDSA and AmericanCenter for Design Education Awards, and Honorary Doctorates from Kansas City Art Institute.
The second installation is a display of work done by graduates from RMCAD's Graphic Design Department.
Featuring more than two dozen pieces created in a variety of graphic design applications by alumni from all over the country, the show highlights the strength of RMCAD's nationally-recognized graphic design program.
