It seems like traffic around Denver has become more congested over the past few weeks.
Since I drive from Lakewood to downtown Denver almost everyday for work (when I miss my bus) during the peak rush hour times of 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., I find myself sitting in a few of the "hot spots" around town, gripping the wheel, noticing my blood pressure rising and wondering why so many people have trouble driving a car at 65 mph.
On Friday, Sept. 8 around 5:20 p.m., I was driving west on 6th Avenue and noticed traffic slowing down at the Kipling Street exit. It appeared that traffic was backed-up from my Union/Simms exit about a mile down the highway. From the time I sat in traffic on 6th Avenue until I reached the traffic light at the top of the Union/Simms exit, it took about 12 minutes.
According to
Allen Albers, Lakewood's traffic engineer, the traffic light at the Union/Simms exit has been skipping the light cycles, causing the red light to only turn green for about short time (if it does turn green) for the exiting 6th Avenue traffic. This is incredibly frustrating, not to mention severely dangerous for the people attempting to exit on Union Boulevard or Simms Street from 6th Avenue. Mixing vehicles traveling at about 65 mph and traffic coming to an abrupt halt, it's a horrible accident waiting to happen.
I know I'm not the only one that has been caught in this ridiculous situation. My fellow rush-hour traffic friends-I am asking for your help.
Please post a story or send me your personal experiences of high-traffic, accident-prone areas around Lakewood. I share your agony of battling my way to and from work each day, and if you'd like to voice your opinions, concerns, frustrations and unfortunate accident stories, I would like to hear them.
