Winter travelers: Be ready, rested and informed
Contributed by: Bob Wilson, CDOT on 2/15/2008

DENVER - With highway travel expected to make its annual increase over the Presidents Day weekend, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is reminding travelers to take full advantage of various amenities to enhance their safety and comfort.

"We maintain 36 rest areas throughout the state and several of those have modernized restrooms with new heating and lighting systems," said CDOT's Maintenance and Operations Branch Manager Johnny Olson. "Customer service is one of our core values and by giving drivers a place to stop, relax and get re-energized before resuming their trip, it's a primary way we serve our customers - the traveling public - and uphold that value."

The rest areas maintained by CDOT, along with a brief listing of the amenities, are available at www.dot.state.co.us/TravelInfo/Facilities/RestAreas/. Travelers should note that overnight parking or camping is not allowed in the state's rest areas.

Colorado also maintains nine Welcome Centers at key locations throughout the state, where volunteers are available to answer questions and assist drivers with their travel plans. Travelers can also get complementary maps, brochures and refreshments. Welcome Center information also is available by accessing the rest area Web page.

Another traveler service is 511, providing easy access to statewide road, weather and construction information.

"Calling 511 allows travelers to quickly access current information about state road and weather conditions, highway closures and detours, planned construction or maintenance activities, chain restrictions and even Amber Alerts (missing or abducted children)," added Olson. "By knowing what the road conditions are like before traveling, drivers can make decisions that increases safety as well as avoids the frustration that goes along with unplanned delays."

Since 2005, the first full year of use in Colorado, and December 2007, 511 has received more than 3.2 million calls. In 2007 alone, 511 handled more than 1.7 million calls.

Road, weather, construction and other winter travel information also is available at www.cotrip.org.
