It's not an explosion... it's Thundersnow!
Contributed by: Philip Rosenberg-Watt on 2/1/2008

LAKEWOOD, Feb 1, 2008 -- It started with a flash of light that brightened the night sky. Then a few seconds later what sounded like a huge and distant explosion rattled the windows of neighborhood houses. It turned out to be a rare meteorological condition known as thundersnow.

Then just as quickly as it moved in, the storm moved out and across the metro area, leaving a layer of snow pellets on Lakewood streets and creating instantaneously hazardous conditions for evening drivers.

At 9:30 pm Lakewood police reported slick road conditions and minor traffic accidents along steep roads and intersections. They dispatched road maintenance crews to clear the accumulation in certain areas.
