Misha May dog welcomed at canine seniors home

Alex, an arthritic, hard-of-hearing and nearly blind 11-year-old Fox Terrier, who was fostered for three months by Lakewood's Misha May Foundation, is now in a permanent home where he will be cared for and loved. Last week he joined a fellow Fox Terrier, under hospice care, at a canine senior citizen's home operated informally by a resident of Nederland, Colorado.

"We are delighted to have the opportunity to preserve Alex's dignity and have him honored by someone who will cherish him in a way he seems never to have known," said Lorraine May. May is the founder and executive director of Misha May, which specializes in mutts, and accepts any dogs who have run out-of-time at local shelters or who have specific medical and behavior needs. "

"Alex was the victim of someone else's midlife crisis," May said. Alex's owner called Misha May to say that she had acquired a younger dog and no longer wanted Alex.

Alex is losing his hearing and his vision. Most of the time he walks into doors, walls and furniture. He is unable to climb or descend stairs and falls down or falls over when attempting to travel just one step. In his new, ranch-style home, there are ramps everywhere and no steps.

Because of his age and neglected health care, Alex needs permanent medication for arthritis pain and for his thyroid. When he was handed over to Misha May, Alex had horrible teeth. His previous owner had been instructed by her veterinarian three years ago to have his teeth cleaned. She did nothing and his teeth became gummed up with plaque. Misha May had his teeth cleaned.
