New affordable senior housing opens in Lakewood
Contributed by: Kris Hayes on 4/13/2007

Built with Renewable Energy Systems to Offer Seniors a "Green" Home

Lakewood, CO - Residences at Creekside opened April 12, 2007 offering 117 affordable apartments to seniors at 1700 Pierce Street in Lakewood, two blocks north of Casa Bonita, with the largest solar collecting system on any residential building in Colorado.

Creekside was built using energy efficient and environmentally friendly systems. A 25,000 watt photovoltaic system on Creekside's roof will provide electricity for the building, reducing the amount needed from power plants burning natural gas or coal. Heat exchangers were installed to recapture heat from wastewater left after taking a shower or doing a load of laundry. By recapturing the heat from the hot water already used, less energy is needed to produce a new round of hot water. All apartments will have energy-efficient windows and appliances. The exterior walls also have significant insulation referred to as "over-insulation".

Creekside is an age and income restricted affordable housing community built by the Lakewood Housing Authority, a nonprofit organization. To qualify, seniors must be 62 years or older and have an annual income of less than $30,120 for a single person or $34,380 for a couple. Funding for the community came from several sources including, loans, grants and tax credits.

Amenities include free underground parking, complimentary high speed internet access, computer lending library, air conditioning, exercise room, on-site salon, and spectacular city and mountain views.
