Striving to give terminal children some joy.
Contributed by: Kim Steuart on 10/19/2006

Joseph's Journey strives to give children with terminal or life-threatening illnesses some joy amongst all the everyday medical treatments and hospital visits they must endure.

They provide one on one journeys to those children who wish to enjoy an outdoor adventure. The adventure can be anything the child wishes to do in the outdoors. It is limited only by each child's imagination. Some of the journeys provided so far have included sleeping beside a bonfire in a tent, wildlife viewing, hunting, fishing, and horseback riding. To date 25 journeys have been provided and out of those 25 journeys, 8 children has since died and for 1 more it is just a matter of time.

Joseph's Journey also holds a free fishing derby every year in June for these ill children and their families. They provide a great lunch with all the goodies the children may want. The children learn about fishing by attending fishing clinics taught by volunteers and The Colorado Division of Wildlife. A local clown usually attends along with Denver West Trout Unlimited, Colorado Bowhunters Assoc., the local Fire Department and many volunteers.

Besides fishing and learning about fish the children have a chance to shoot a bow and arrow, talk to the firemen and explore their trucks, get their faces painted and have balloon art made for them. They also take home a brand new fishing pole for future use, a prize from the prize tent and a goodie bag. It is a day where they can have fun and forget about their illnesses, at least for a short time. The parents also get the chance to see their child having some fun and enjoying themselves.

Joseph's Journey is a very small organization, started and run by the Steuart Family after the death of their 14 year old son, Joseph in 2000. They work full time jobs and still manage to run Joseph's Journey. No one in the organization including the founders, and board membersare paid which allows more of the money to go straight to the children. This organization is run strictly using volunteer members.

Working full time jobs and running Joseph's Journey takesa tremendous amount of time and receiving a grant for $1,000.00 would be a great benefit to Joseph's Journey and the children they strive to help.
