I would like to nominate the Lakewood Optimists for your Communty Grant. The Lakewood Breakfast Optimists have been an intregal part of Lakewood since 1963. Their purpose is to support, assist and to contribute to the health and well-being of the youth of our community. The involvement of the Lakewood Breaksfast Optimists is to be admired. The Club has their Yearly Projects: 1) assisting at the Jeffo Action Center - with their backpack/school supply distribution; 2)The Brain Bowl - an academic competition held between teams of middle school students, which promotes team work and leadership skills; 3) The Oratorical( for both the Hearing and Deaf/Hearing Impaired) - a competition that brings bright, informed and articulate highschool students together to present their views on current topics through Public Speaking. The winning students also receive scholarship money for their efforts; 4)The Essay Contest - an academic competition that brings together the brightest students who excell at written communication; 5) Respect for Law Week - the Club nominates a young adult who demonsrates extraordinary involvement in their concern for the Safety of the Community. This year the Club nominated a Lakewood Police Department Cadet; 6) Involvement in the annual HOBY Leadership Seminar - a 3-day seminar that inspires young adults to become involved in community service as well as begin Junior Optimist Clubs in their schools; 7) Childhood Cancer Campaign - in addition to monetary contributions and the placement of a plaque at the Anschutz Pavillion, this club continually provides backpacks, hats and more recently Healing Journals to children fighting cancer. 8)The yearly Christmas Party for developmentally disabled children. The club even has Santa as a member. 9) Monetary support to teachers who express concern over at-risk,low income students, And, while this this is impressive, the generousity of the Club with their monetary donations is equally so. Last year the Optimists helped such organizations as the Salvation Army in their Katrina efforts, Family Homestead, Jeffco Action Center, Second Wind Foundation, Mischa May Animal Rescue & Adoption, Childhood Cancer Campaign. Finally, it is this last project that is the most impressive and demonstrates true Love of Community; it is the one project that is done with regularity, that is probably as old as the Club itself - 'Flags on Colfax'. On every national holiday,(and this year in honor of the Colfax Marathon) the Lakewood Optimist Club members, meet at the W. Metro Fire Dept. to pick up their flag-laden trailer, with the intent of placing 65 American Flags along the W. Colfax median, from Quail to the west side of Sheridan. As a result of years of dedication of club members, the Mayor and the Lakewood City Council declared June 12 "Flags on Colfax Day". This year we are proud to boast the honor of having had newly-elected Councilwoman Vick Stack also participate in the project. It is for this project that the Club would use the grant money for if awarded. (the flag trailer is in need of repair and upgrade). As an Optimist member of just two years, I cannot say enough about the dedication of these Club Members, who give willingly of their time and money, so that Lakewood can continue to be the proud Community it is.
