Nonprofit helps sick kids have a day of fun
Contributed by: Kim Steuart on 4/3/2007

Each year children with terminal and life-threatening illnesses can look forward to spending the day fishing and having a great time, getting a break from all their medical treatments, bringing a smile to their faces if only briefly before they must once again face their daily struggles.

Joseph's Journey , a local Lakewood nonprofit organization, holds an annual fishing derby for ill children and their families. They enjoy fishing, learning about fish and their habitats, knot tying, archery, laughing with a clown, visiting with local firemen, inspecting the fire trucks, and so much more.

To attend, all the families need to do is RSVP and show up at the lake. Joseph's Journey takes care of all the planning, providing all the equipment and prizes to make the day a success. Lunch and snacks are also provided which will include a variety of food and drinks, even ice cream.

Each child will go home with a brand-new rod and reel, a goodie bag and a prize from the prize tent. The day could not take place without help from many people including The Division of Wildlife, Denver West Trout Unlimited, The local Fire dept., The Colorado Bowhunters Association, The Aurora Sportsmen's Warehouse, Dreyers, and many more volunteers.

If any child with a terminal or life-threatening illness would like to come all they need to do is call to RSVP at 303 989-5710.

This year the derby will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2007, rain or shine. Start times are 10:00am and 12:30pm with the day ending at 3:00pm. The location is near C-470 and Wadsworth, exact directions will be given when you RSVP.

The Steuarts provide a day to be remembered for children and their families. Also, the fishing derby is just a small part of the heart warming events they provide for terminally ill children and their families. Hats off to you both! I wish I could vote many times for you.
