Colorado Rockies: Promoting more than baseball
Contributed by: Alyssa Barker on 4/26/2008

As a teenager in today's society, I am aware that positive role models are significant factors in our lives. They teach us to become someone that will use our abilities to make a constructive impact, and they also provide examples of how to act when we are going through a rough time so that we might make the best of times out of the worst. The Colorado Rockies are encouraging idols for people of all ages due to the effects of their achievements as well as the way they handle their responsibilities as athletes.

Last season, the Rockies were successful in earning their way to the World Series Playoffs for the first time in their history. They dominated in the playoffs and guaranteed themselves a spot in the 2007 World Series along with the well-known Boston Red Sox. The Rockies had never before been involved in such a widely known series and had only been a team since 1993. Because of that, most people did not know of the Colorado Rockies baseball team. Once the information was announced that the Red Sox would be competing against the Rockies for the number one title in American baseball, the Rockies were instantly nationally recognized.

Through their experience in the series, although they did not defeat the Red Sox, they managed to teach fans a valuable concept. Appropriate fame does not occur to people just because they are on television and make significant amounts of money; popularity becomes existent through hard work, determination, and perseverance. The Rockies were triumphant in proving this through the World Series. They acquired more and more fans each game they advanced in the playoffs and are now known to all baseball fans. The fact that the Rockies make an immense sum of money and that they are on television quite often did not bring them supporters. Their support came from their hours and hours of hard practices that helped them advance their skills so that they could make it into the playoffs and succeed.

Although the Rockies provide a positive example as a team, they also uphold their responsibilities as role models and athletes individually. Many professional athletes in today's society are being fined, suspended, expelled, or penalized in other ways for the poor decisions they make. For example, baseball players like Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa are constantly being penalized for taking performance enhancing steroids, which directly involve their sport, but Michael Vick is serving time in prison for dogfight charges which he organized. Because he is in jail, he is no longer able to play in the NFL. The Rockies are wise enough as individuals and as a team to know that the choices they make will affect their sport career. Therefore, since the Colorado Rockies very rarely find themselves in inapt situations, they are very positive role models for fans of every age.
They have made themselves known through their hard work and positive choices, what's not to love about our Rockies?
