It was September 15th, 2007, a gloomy night by many standards. I had just watched the last agonizing moments of a Rockies loss, one of blowout proportions to the Florida Marlins. I had tickets in my hand for the game the next afternoon, but the bitter taste that the playoffs were now certainly out of reach burned ferociously in my mouth.
But I had an idea. I was a young girl when the Rockies came to be and attended their opening week at Mile High Stadium. I had always thought of them as my collective little brother of sorts. So I decided to do what any good big sister would do: I believed.
I went out after the game and purchased a piece of white poster board and a large purple marker. Late into the evening I worked on The Sign. It bears the title of that iconic Journey song: "Don't Stop Believin'." I brought it with me to that game the next day, the finale against the Florida Marlins. What happened from there is a piece of baseball superstition that can not be ignored. As I sat in the stands waving my sign valiantly in a sparse crowd of true believers, the Rockies kicked off the greatest playoff run in Major League history.
From that day forward the Rockies won 11 in a row, and eventually 21 of 22, that landed them in the World Series for the first time in franchise history. With my sign by my side and trepidation in my heart, over those last few weeks I started to truly believe that something special was happening.
The Sign, as it has come to be known, accompanied me to the last game of the regular season, an affair against the Arizona Diamondbacks that had to be won to keep our playoff hopes alive. The Sign also accompanied me to the last game of the NLCS, again against the Diamondbacks, the game that propelled the Rockies to the World Series.
Through time and wear the edges of The Sign have faded and it is bent and torn in several places. The color has run in a few spots and faded in others. But I plan to continue to take The Sign and everything it represents to every Rockies game I attend this year. The Sign has two signatures on it from Rockies players and I plan to get many more.
I watched broth the last game of the regular season and the NLCS from the last row of the upper deck. Spending a game in a suite at Coors Field would be a dream. Seeing as May 21st also happens to be my 21st birthday, I would envision no better birthday present than watching My Boys with The Sign, playing the greatest sport on Earth.
