The first thing that caught my eye when I read about this contest was that the winners receive twelve Rockies tickets. Being the fourth of eight children, I was immediately excited at the prospect of our whole family possibly going to a Rockies game for free! In explanation, when you take a normal ticket price and multiply it by ten, the dollars add up pretty fast. This is mostly the reason that I've never been to a major league baseball game, but then, I wasn't much of a Rockies fan until recently. Last summer, my dad "educated" all of us kids, and I found that baseball is a lot more interesting if you know certain basic things, scoring being one of them! That made a big difference, and ever since, I've been following the Rockies closely through their 2008 season, learning more about baseball all the time. When I read about this contest, I decided that I might be able to combine my thoughts abut the Rockies and my interest in creative writing. The result was this poem, an Italian sonnet,which I playfully and somewhat dramatically title:
"Ode to the Rockies"
The Rockies, one with mountain peaks in fame
Which steeply rise midst valleys and dry plains
And are concealed oft by portentous rains,
They struggle to play worthy of their name.
Each player toils, and yet they lose the game;
Each man dejected walks away, hope wanes,
While nemesis rejoices o'er his gains,
Forgetting he has oft played much the same.
What matters it? Let trials and troubles come,
For they precede the glorious victory.
Did not Odysseus triumph through his woes?
And Theseus the Minotaur o'ercome?
So e'en if Rockies' triumphs hidden be,
There's hope when Rockies players swing and throw.
