Grammy loves the Rockies
Contributed by: Sybil Riggs on 5/13/2008

Why I love the Rockies? You mean, because having gone to their opening day game in 1993 at Mile High Stadium and then being one of their most faithful fans for the next 14 seasons doesn't automatically prove I LOVE THE ROCKIES. Now, you have to understand, I didn't just go to the 1st game. It was my first ever major league baseball game and my husband dragged me kicking and screaming because I had other important things to do getting ready for vacation to Mexico and we were leaving the very next morning.

We settled in our seats, I enjoyed all the fun pregame hoopla and loved the National Anthem. Eric Young came up to bat, cracked a home run and this old lady was all of a sudden the number one Rockies fan for life. I have faithfully sung their praises, gone to games, watched them on TV, listened to them on the radio, sat in my car till the end of an inning, yelled at the TV and turned it off if they got too bad and privately said a little prayer for the various personal situations some of the players have endured.

Back to the first ever major league game - my husband reminded me that back in the mid-sixties he dragged me to another game - I had forgotten because truly baseball was just not my thing. That game was just an exhibition anyway played in the new Astrodome between Houston and the Yankees. That pales for me when compared to some of our fun experiences enjoying Rockies games with friends and family, some of whom are wildly loyal to their own teams such as St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros. Whatever. Many times during one of the team's slumps we've taken guests out to the ballgame prefacing it with a statement about it being a lovely evening and Coors Field being an impressive place and a great way to experience the area even if the game might be less than hoped for.
We have an especially fond memory of attending a preseason game in Arizona when Larry Walker and Vinny Castilla were players. We went to the practice field and my husband got Larry's signature. We were the only fans there and Larry chatted for a moment but when we caught up with Vinny the pen would not write. He smiled and said, "come back tomorrow" and Vinny Castilla has been Vinny "come back tomorrow" at our home every since.

Yes, I love the Rockies and loved their success of last season and wish them continued success on and off the field. As a grandmother I offer them a small reminder. They have a huge responsibility as well as a privilege to live up to a high standard for themselves, their team and their fans. GO ROCKIES.
