Personal safety assembly at Dunstan Middle School
Contributed by: Corina Black on 5/23/2007

A personal safety and self-defense assembly was held at Dunstan Middle School on Wednesday, May 23rd. Approximately 200 8th grade girls and female teachers and administrators attended the personal safety assembly held during their Academic Focus (homeroom) in their large new gym.

The presenter was Master Corina Black, 6th Degree Black and owner of the ATA Black Belt Academy in Lakewood, Colorado.

"The girls were very attentive and interested in keeping themselves safe," says Black. "I was very pleased with them accepting the challenge of keeping themselves safe over the next 8 years as they complete high school and then college." "I outlined a four-step plan as a starter for personal safety and awareness -- P-erceive; A-nalyze; F-ormulate; I-nitiate." "They also got to try a hands on approach to someone grabbing them and a spacial body positioning drill in relation to a real or perceived threat."

"I want to thank the principal and counselors of Dunstan Middle School for inviting me to speak. They are a great group of caring and involved people in the lives of young men and women in our community."
