Staying Safe at Home as We Age
Contributed by: MEMORY BRIDGING on 11/15/2007

Within the last few years a new term has started to be used to describe something that most of us desire. Aging-in-place is the term used to describe the process of preparing your residence and maintaining as much independence as we progress into our senior years. Saturday, November 17 at 10:00 am the Atria Inn at Lakewood, MEMORY BRIDGING and Paul Davis Restoration will present home safety information to help you or your loved one to stay safe and age in place.

The goal of aging-in-place is to minimize the number of health-related moves that are necessary as we mature, and our care needs change. For some, aging in place just happens, their health and vitality never waivers, but for others, planning and preparation are necessary. Preparations can be pre-emptive, like making sure your residence is kept clear of clutter and tripping hazards to prevent falls. Preparations can also be in response to health changes. It could be modifications and tools to make your residence more accessible, like grab bars or the installation of barrier free walk in bathtubs.

This free seminar will cover:

Fall Prevention, Fall Survival - 1 out of every 3 seniors who live at home will experience a fall this year, and half who fall never regain their level of mobility and independence. Only one senior in four who breaks a hip fully recover. Suggestions will be provided on how to minimize tripping hazards and information on how best to respond should you fall so that injuries are not made worse.

Home Health Risks - Even with our dry climate, Colorado ranks in the top 10 for high levels of mold present inside homes. The possibility of mold only increases when rooms are closed up or items are stored for long-periods of time. Certain types of mold can have severe impacts on your health, and a simple surface clean may not be enough to rid the problem.

Home Accessibility Modifications - if your health requires that modifications be made to your home, it doesn't mean that the beauty or resale value has to be compromised. The Paul Davis representative will discuss conversions that are tasteful and that blend with the look of your home.

Accessibility Benefits - for some individuals, it is possible to receive benefits from either the Veterans Administration or from Medicaid to cover some of the costs related to making your home accessible and safer.

If you'd like to learn more about safe ways to age in place and ways to improve the accessibility of your home, then you'll want to attend this free seminar on Saturday, November 17 at 10:00 am at the Atria Inn at Lakewood located at 555 S Pierce St Lakewood, CO 80226.
