The field at Kendrick Lakes Elementary was once unplayable. At one point in time, it was so bad that the school had to hold its annual Field Day at a neighborhood park. Now, thanks to the generosity of the school's community, the field is seeing more playing time.
The staff, students and community celebrated its new quarter-mile track, baseball diamond and renovated field on September 25. Cyndy Whitlock, executive director of school managementthrew the first pitch as the school's choir sang
Take Me out to the Ballgame and
America the Beautiful.
"It is a great day for our school and our community," said Principal Barbara Gunther. "This is what it's all about; the community supporting our school and our school supporting the community."
The school raised over $7,000 for its PTA
Love Your School Campaign that collected funds for special school-improvement projects. Parents Chris and Shannon Willis, who own Colorado Total Maintenance (CTM) Corporation, a landscaping company, adopted the field, built the track and overhauled the baseball diamond.
"For all who were there, it was a touching reminder of what a community that works together can achieve," said Gunther.
