King Sooper's Lakewood Commons
Contributed by: Robert White on 6/16/2006

Okay, I'm stupid. I admit it up front. That's more than the clerk at King Sooper's did.

Maybe I'm ticked because my back was aching (I just had my first treatment at a back ((like "Oh, my aching back)) clinic). Maybe I'm ticked because this was my second trip to King's today. Maybe I'm ticked because the clerk treated me like the moron that I am. Maybe I'm ticked because not only did I check out my one purchase myself, there by doing the grocery store's work for them, I paid King Sooper's a $1.00 to do it. THE CUSTOMER'S ALWAYS RIGHT has definitely disappeared.

I had to buy Fiji water to make up a concoction they gave me at the clinic. I was in a hurry to get home and rest my back. All I saw on the sign by the water was $8.99. I didn't read the fine print that probably explained they were going to nail me an extra buck if I didn't scan my King Sooper's card. It's funny but when it's after six o'clock and I'm in a crowded store and my back is killing me, I don't bother to read the fine print that seems to be embedded in the simple transaction of buying a half dozen bottles of water these days.

So it was after 6:00 p.m. tonight, all the clerks had half a dozen more customers than they could take care of in a timely manner, and even the check-it-out yourself kiosks were lined up with people. I didn't have a basket because I was only on planning on purchasing one bottle, not a half dozen for $8.99.

I get my turn to check out the one purchase. By now there are a group of people behind, all waiting for me so they could get their turn.

I walked up to the machine, which was slow and was just coming up with the first screen. I pressed start and it came up with "Scan Your King Sooper's Card Now." So I set the bottled water down and before I could get the card out of my billfold, the machine scanned the water. I figured it was okay because I've never bought bottled water at King's before and didn't know I had to scan my card before I got the price they had clearly listed on the shelf where I got the water

Wack. The $8.99 became $9.99. So, instead of being smart and just walking back the width of the store and getting another six bottles of Fiji water and starting all over again, I went ahead and completed the transaction. THAT WAS MY STUPID MISTAKE.

At some point after six, the machine doesn't give any change. I'd put in a $20.00 bill and walked up to the woman who was watching the machines. She said get your nine dollars under the machine. So I went back, got the $9.00 and picked up the water. She gave me the .76 cents.

I said, "Do you know your sign back there said the Fiji water is $8.99?" I said it to her two more times while she pretended to not understand what I was talking about. Then she pointed out the ticket which said, "Sign up for your Sooper Card. Sooper Card would have saved you 1.00."

"I have a Sooper card," I said.

In a disgusted voice she used for those annoying people like me who she clearly thought were put on earth only to cause her problems, she waved a little ticket in my direction and said, "Here, take this over to Customer Service and they'll give you your dollar."

Not only did I do King's job by checking the thing out myself, now she wanted me to do her job.

She was in charge of the self-checkout. It baffles me why she couldn't have straighten it out herself. Here I was holding over a gallon of water, my back was aching more because of the weight, and she was giving me a choice to forget the dollar or go stand in another long line and hassle it out with another clerk there.

It wasn't worth the dollar. I guess King's can use it more than I can. What I've learned is that if I'm going to have to stand in a line, I might as well let a checker do the job instead of ineptly trying to do it myself.

The checker would have given me the correct change with no hassle. Well, almost no hassle.

The reason they did not fix it at U-Scan is because the have to put in the super card refund code (witch they prob do not know since it does not get used often) and in order to do that they have to have a register open on the U-Scan and you said it was busy so they probably did not have a register open.

If you are too stupid or lazy to scan your Sooper Card, which you can do at any time while you scan your groceries, you have nothing to complain about. Be responible for you inaction, not King Soopers.
