This is in response to your article "Prairie Dogs Affected by Hospital Construction", MileHighNews.com, published on February 21, 2008. St. Anthony Hospital, and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) worked with Ken Caryl Ranch Metro District (KCRMD) to obtain and confirm a release site for the prairie dogs located at the Denver Federal Center. KCRMD withdrew their offer at the last minute stating tax/TABOR issues. The local HSUS offered to help them work through the issues, but KCRMD did not respond to their offer. Also, the HSUS asked St. Anthony Hospital for an extension so they could help resolve the issue with KCRMD, and St. Anthony Hospital refused. As a result of this stalemate the prairie dogs will die. The hospital has contracted with a company to poison the prairie dogs with CO2. Many caring and concerned people have worked for months to ensure the relocation of the prairie dogs. As Mr. Bob Wallace, spokesman for St. Anthony's West, stated in the article "his company deemed the relocation of the colony the best thing for the environment and project". KCRMD and St. Anthony Hospital must follow the lead of the HSUS, come back to the table, and work together to find a way to get these highly social, and intelligent animals moved to a new home.
PS: "studies do conclude that CO2 causes pain and distress in animals indicates a need for careful reconsideration of its use", "there is a growing body of evidence indicating that exposure to CO2 causes more than momentary pain and distress in these and other animals". More information can be found at the HSUS web site.
