Foothills Park & Recreation proposed tax hike
Contributed by: Barbara Hanson on 4/22/2008

Is anyone but me, mad about this constant begging for money from so many different sources? It is always presented that it will only cost the average household 10 cents every time they shop or $1 per month per person. The Foothills Park and Recreation District is talking about a $2 per month INCREASE for each $100,000 home value. The way they would have the average person think is that this is very little to pay for their services.

It is misleading to use the $100,000 value when most house in the district far exceed that amount. I feel we are already paying way too much and to ask for even a penny more is out of the question. They asked last year and voters told them no, that they needed to learn to manage better. A lot of good that did. They are back this year asking for twice as much and paying 3 times as much to hold the election this year instead of in an off year.

My 88 year old mother is being dollared and dimed beyond what she can afford. She does not go to the rec center. I do not either and neither does my husband, and yet we are supposed to help pay for all these services and then smile our way through yet another increase. User fees should be increased, not taxes. I am sorry, but I have not seen that any of these facilities are keeping the crime rate down or people more fit. You can walk for free elsewhere to get exercise.

Pools and ice rinks and golf courses should mostly be paid for by people who use them. These are not necessities of life. Some of the money they are asking for will be used for exercise equipment. If you cannot afford to pay for using these facilities to exercise on fancy equipment, I suggest you do what many people have done for years - Walk. It just isn't fair to ask seniors and others that do not use these facilities and in many cases cannot afford more taxes to continue to chip in for other people's recreation. It must stop somewhere.

Barbara, You're not the only one tired of the constant tax increases, begging and scare tactics. Just last week, Foothills Park violated campaign finance laws by using the Summer catalog to promote a "yes" vote. They don't think it's wrong though. Read the story at www.facethestate.com
