Hack pundits and elections
Contributed by: michael obeirne on 11/9/2007

Mr. Allan Berger -

I've enjoyed reading your articles. If not for your simplistic and off-based rationale, you might have a future as a pundit. I've been one of the nice citizens holding my tongue during this whole charade you call "an election". No more, Sir.

Some find their fame in politics and some driving cars through flaming hoops. You might think about the latter.

The root cause of voter discontent stems from ramblings such as yours resulting in numb minds inclined towards little forward motion.

Although the election is over, the groundswell of individual inquiry has breached the shores of complacency. This natural act has resulted in children turning into adults due to pain having grown to see the world as it is: full of bit players set on a stage of myriad interests. Here in these United States however, Mr. Berger, folks are seeing what is behind the shinny long drape of droll verbosity and it aint the Great AND Wonderful OZ. Instead, readers are understanding opinions like yours are nothing more than waxings with no particular outcome in mind; just enough to entertain -- and nothing more.

Read this: Money buys governments... and all the bit players within if unprincipled and easily made pie-eyed by high office with no agenda in mind aside from UTOPIA.

No more politics for me, sir.

No more commentary; just action.

Michael W. O'Beirne

All -- I've avoided dealing with the blending of politics and the environment in these pages. I'll write my opinion on the USGBC and Belmar soon. Politics will need to be covered too as the environmental movement has become the cause celeb in many circles. Some may be aware my son Seamus was born with chronic asthma. I have a really good idea of how our environment impacts lives. I've also been in the energy development game for many years now. I attended the last several GreenBuilds as well as Brownfields and many gatherings geared towards innovation dealing with environmental issues. I'll do my best to answer Janice point that we should all do a little something to make a change to benefit the environment. I agree. However, I would like very much to see Lakewood do amazing things on an epoch scale to make change in the very near term. I'll pick this up later with specifics and action steps. Thanks for the civil tone to this exchange.

It is pretty sad to think that as simple as a mail-in ballot is, there are still that many people who didn't vote?! Amazing, isn't it Max? Also the numbers of citizens who are qualified to vote, don't do so! It is such a simple process to register to vote. It is obvious that there are alot of frustrated people out there that feel their vote just doesn't count, so why bother? Maybe as registered voters, we can work together to get those people interested in the electoral process again, and make them feel that they can indeed make a difference in the outcome of ALL elections. That would truly be an accomplishment, now wouldn't it?

Mr. Burns -- The final file sent by the JeffCO Clerk's office on Wed. showed 61,069 ballots mailed, 26,850 returned and 596 spoiled or undeliverable. Of the approximately 25,000 INACTIVE Lakewood registered voters who didn't receive ballots 21,172 have NEVER voted in a Lakewood election.

Michael -- I did my homework and flunked the quiz. You are right, I was a 1,000 times wrong. It's a 1.7 Megawatt generator. My notes also reminded me that 90% of the demolition materials were recycled back into the new construction and a serious chemical contamination was cleaned from the site and the surrounding area.

I agree, we need to do much much more to green our community. Any step, however small, I applaud. I would like to take giant leaps but need to be content with smaller steps. It is too bad you couldn't be here, Mr. Obeirne. Since you are very active in develpment maybe you would have enjoyed many of the topics. I invite all of you to go to USGBC.org. It is a great organization and it would be nice to see us all unite for a positive topic.

Janice and Max -- I supported Green Bonds when they were fresh on the scene more than 5 years ago. Please do your homework. Belmar is doing little inspirational as was promoted when they lured Wayne Allard and Bob Beauprez into supporting $2 billion dollars in tax payer incentives. And, your solar numbers are off by a factor of 1,000. I too want a cleaner and sustainable environment. I've been disappointed thus far in that the rhetoric does not match actions.

Mr. Tyler, Ms. Bradburn is correct in her voter numbers. Your math and or information are incorrect. Check it out at the Jeffco Election Commission, they will give you the correct numbers! And you know what? The election is over, so why don't YOU back off of your vitriol. It is over, until the next cycle, OK? Ms. Bradburn, while you are at the conference you are attending, you should inquire about the status of using Industrial hemp, instead of clear-cutting our forests. Industrial Hemp can reduce the consumption of our natural forests by 80%. If you are truly interested in saving our forests and becoming a "green" country, this is a step in a very positive direction. Thank You, Mike Burns.

Though I disagreed with Mr. Berger, his posts were thoughtful and without the vitriol of Mr. Burns. Please note that 45% of the voters who received ballots voted, not less than 30%, and they were overwhelmingly the people who ALWAYS vote and show an interest. These are the people who overwhelmingly voted for council candidates who were not part of the Bertolli slate by margins of 55% to 70%. These are the same people who have consistently voted for financial stability and quality leadership. There was a strong message from these folks for Murphy, and I expect he heard it loud and clear. Finally, Ms. Bradburn if you’re at a Green conference you may have heard that Belmar (that development the Mr. Burns derides) has the first multi-tenant LEEDS certified office building in the country as well as one of the largest with Whole Foods. They also have a wind-farm and are about to complete a 1.7 Gigawat solar power generation system on site. That’s pretty darn Green!

Like I have said here in the past day or two. Murphy had 46% of the registered voters in Lakewood vote against him! And without DeLay "sitting around at her house doing nothing, and still getting 5% of the vote" this election could very well have turned out quite differently! Rita Bertolli could very easily be our Mayor! So Mr. Murphy, watch what actions you take, because 46% of the voters of Lakewood will be watching you too!

Yes, but action that is also just self agenda feels worse. Less than 1/3 of registered voters voted. Less than half of the population of Lakewood is even registered to vote. I am sitting here in Chicago at the U.S. Green Build Conference talking about how to protect our natural resources through green building. (Buildins take over 40% of all resources) It is unfortunate that this issue couldn't be discussed in these elections since the discussion was about development or redevelopment happening at all. Mr. Berger is involved. I would say that holds many more kudos than not being involved at all. Where is the action w/ this article? This article sir is politics.
