Senators Take Long Week Ends
Contributed by: James Esteban on 4/16/2008

During the current session in congress 70% of All Roll Call Votes are performed between the hours of 10:00 AM on Thursday to 2:00 AM on Friday. There have been no Roll Call Votes recorded prior to 4:00 PM on Monday and no Roll Call Votes recorded after 10:00 AM on friday. For the remainder of the week most Roll Call Votes in the Senate have occurred after 10:00 AM. So it's clear that long weekends are a very strong motivator for Senators. Most Roll Call Votes have occurred on the effective last day of the week "Thursday" in a rush to get out of the door.

I think it's a pretty sad day when Senators are more motivated to get off early on friday and come in late on Monday, do mostly nothing all week and then get busy on the last day of the week so that you can have a long weekend to take it easy.

Also, did you know that John McCain has missed 56% of the votes in the Senate last session. He has missed 65% of the votes during this session. Senators Obama and Clinton are only doing a little better. Do they not get paid their Congressional salaries during the presidential elections? Are they not elected to serve the constituents of the state. Do Senators not care about that fact that their fellow Senators are irresponsible and are not living up to the responsibility bestowed upon them by the constituents of their state.

The Senate is a joke. They need to get busy. Roll Call Votes are down by 25% this session. I guess the Democratics have lost their zeal to get the job done.

5/06/08:
I received a call last week from one of Senator Allard's staff. He seemed upset that I didn't understand that voting wasn't the only thing that senators do. I told him I can only draw conclusions on the data that I have and that data indicates that Senators like to do all their voting on thursday so that they can get out early on Friday and in late on Monday. He wanted to know where I got my data and I told him that I wrote a program myself that collects the data from the roll call votes page at senate.gov. I suggested that perhaps they could change this perception by spreading the votes out over more days of the week. This should make it a little easier on some of the older guys. Well maybe not because then the might lose the weekends for snoozing.

I'm really impressed with the way stories get circulated on yourhub.
