Overlooking "The Snake"
Contributed by: Jesse Schaffer on 10/10/2006

Ask any person who has ever been a fan of the Denver Broncos, and every single one of them will tell you that John Elway is the greatest quarterback who ever lived. Now every quarterback who takes the reins for the starting job in Denver is expected to be just as good, if not better, than John Elway.

Take Jake Plummer, the current starting quarterback of the Broncos. Plummer, after coming over from Arizona, has resurrected his career, put up record breaking stats, and led the Broncos to three straight playoff appearances. However, for a lot people, it was just not enough.

The Broncos must have felt the same way, as they drafted rookie quarterback Jay Cutler in the first round of last April's draft. Without a doubt, rookie quarterback Cutler is an amazing talent, and a future star, but currently Plummer is the only man who should be playing quarterback for the Denver Broncos.

A first round draft pick is always something to get excited about, especially when that player happens to be a quarterback. Cutler had a flawless college career at Vanderbilt, as he ran the offense well despite the little talent that was around him.

During the preseason, Cutler seemed more than ready to live up to the hype as he threw for 561 yards and posted a 108.3 quarterback rating, progress rarely ever seen from a rookie quarterback. All this evidence can only mean that sooner or later Jay Cutler will be the Broncos starting quarterback, and many people think that he is ready for that responsibility right now.

However, this is not the future. The reality check here is that Jake Plummer has demonstrated that he is more than capable of running the Bronco's offense.

Throughout his time in Denver, Plummer has posted an 88.6 quarterback rating and has thrown for 60 touchdowns with only 34 interceptions. As the starting quarterback in Denver he has also won 32 games and lost only 11.

The Bronco's fans come down hard on Jake Plummer because of his interceptions, yet what's amazing is that the Broncos have made the playoffs every year that he has played in Denver.

If that's not enough, take a look at the success of other rookie quarterbacks who started in their first season, and history says that they did not have much success.

Whenever a team sacrifices so much to pick up on a quarterback, it can only mean that the player who is ahead of him is almost out of time. Despite the hype and the success surrounding Cutler, there is no way he should even step on the field this season.

Plummer has earned his spot and is the only quarterback who should be starting in Denver. The future seems to be well taken care of, but for now Jake "The Snake" is doing what he does best -- proving everybody wrong.

On a personal level, I like Jake. I just don't think he can win the big games.
