While official practices are not yet underway, the upcoming basketball season is already shaping up kindly for the CCU men's basketball team. Senior forward
Brian Stamer
has been named the 2007-08 RMAC pre-season player of the year, while sophomore
Justin Neuhaus
was recently pegged pre-season defensive player of the year.
Stamer is coming off of a spectacular junior campaign in which he averaged 20.7 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Brian racked up 16 double-doubles last season and poured in an RMAC season-high of 40 points versus Chadron State this past Feb. 17.
During the final four games of last year's regular season, Stamer put the Cougars on his back, averaging 29 points and 14 rebounds per game while leading the men to a berth in the conference tournament.
Stamer's selection makes him the second Cougar ever to receive the RMAC's most heralded pre-season award, joining former guard
Matt Vaughn
, who earned the nod in 2004.
Last year's RMAC freshman of the year, Justin Neuhaus, can now add another award to his trophy case, as the 6-11 man in the middle was recently tabbed the 2007-08 RMAC Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year.
Neuhaus anchored the paint for the Cougars last season, tallying eight points and five boards per game, while leading the conference with 45 total blocked shots. Justin came on strong in the latter part of the year, developing into a defensive catalyst and proving instrumental in leading the Cougars to wins in 11 of their last 18 games.
In women's basketball, CCU Athletics is proud to announce that sophomore guard
Talmai Aguirre
has been named 2007-08 Pre-Season First Team All-RMAC.
Aguirre, a high scoring guard from Silver City, New Mexico, averaged a team-high 17.5 points per game last season, while finishing second in the RMAC in made three point field goals per game.
Talmai helped the ladies to seven wins last year, including a confidence building upset over regionally ranked Nebraska-Kearney. For her efforts Aguirre was named 2006-07 RMAC Freshman of the Year in addition to being voted to the All-RMAC Second-Team.
