Jerry Fitzgerald named coach of the year

Jerry Fitzgerald has been named Coach of the Year by the coaches of the Jeffco 5A Girls Basketball League. Fitzgerald took over the program at Lakewood High School seven years ago, when the team went 0 - 19. This season, the Lakewood Girls Basketball team went 21 - 5, won the Jeffco 5A Championship, and went to the Great 8 State tournament, finishing 7th in the state.

This was Fitzgerald's 23rd season of coaching girls basketball, including years at St. Anne's in Arvada, Mullen, and Lakewood. He is now retiring from coaching. He has been assisted at Lakewood High School by his daughter, Janessa Fitzgerald, who is also leaving the program.

Fitzgerald, who was born and raised in Idaho Springs, now lives in Evergreen with his wife, Julie. The couple owns and operates the Dairy Queen at 7580 West 64th Avenue in Arvada.
