The Rollin' Rockies were cordially invited to participate in the Junior Rolling Nuggets year-end picnic on Saturday, May 24th at Morse Park in Lakewood - not only to celebrate the kid's wheelchair basketball team's successful season, but also to introduce the sport of wheelchair softball.
The event was such a success that a new kids wheelchair softball team is forming with intentions to compete at the National Wheelchair Softball Association's national tournament for juniors which will take place on August 8-9, 2008 in Omaha, Neb.
"I like it a lot," says 13-year-old
Ryan Miller
. Miller along with several of his wheelchair basketball teammates will become part of the core group of kids who will make up the new Rookie Rockies - the kids equivalent of the Rollin' Rockies. Other programs such as the Avalanche sled hockey team for kids and Colorado Wheelchair Sports Association (CWS) are also on board to get the ball rolling with the new program. "We are now offering a year-round program for kids," says Avalanche Sled Hockey president and CWS board member
Corey Fairbanks
.
In addition to the initial clinic, the Rollin' Rockies will be conducting several softball clinics each day to introduce the sport to even more kids during the Colorado Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp which takes place June 9-13 at Gateway High School in Aurora. The event is expected to attract over 100 kids with physical disabilities this year.
The team plans its first official practice on June 26 at the Jason Jennings Adaptive Field in Lakewood. The program is open and free-of-charge to children who are wheelchair users. For more information or to sign up, visit the Rollin' Rockies website at www.rollinrockies.com
