The i9 Sports spring flag football season in Golden wrapped up with many exciting tournament games. As it had been all spring, the weather was a bit spotty, with breezy conditions at Maple Grove Elementary School. More than 220 players completed their season and then enjoyed Johnny's New York Pizza and other snacks while receiving their trophies and medals. The divisions were named after characters from the movie Narnia, in honor of i9 Sports' partnership with the new Disney film.
The Reepicheeps (ages 6-7) Division title was won by the Pirates, coached by Jeff Muller, over the Thunderbirds, led by Jerod Thiele, 44-6. In other games, the Dragons, with Victor Marquez at the helm, squeaked by Eric Christensen's Blackhawks, 26-18, while Doak Felix's Wildcats downed the Wolverines, coached by Mitch Cunningham, 20-6. In the Pevencies (ages 8-9) Division, the Mustangs took the title over the Orcas, coached by Robert Kreutzer, in a 14-8 thriller. As winning coach Jason Vincent said, "I think it was a model game for what i9 is trying to promote. It was two really good teams that played as hard as they could. Both teams displayed great sportsmanship and fair play. The tone of the game was very positive and encouraging toward each other. It was one of those games that it was too bad there had to be a winner and a loser." Other division games featured Kelly Harris' Thunderwolves edging the Pumas, coached by Chris Russo, 18-13, and the Bearcats, led by Les Masdin, nipping the Skip Norman's Stingers, 34-32.
The Caspians (ages 10-11) Division final was a 13-12 thriller with the Sabercats, coached by Michael Feddolino, downing the Patriots, directed by Anthony Romero. Other games saw John Triolo's Stingrays team getting the victory over the Lightning, coached by Jim McCormick, and the Sharks, coached by Bryce Morgan, winning over Richard Drake's Huskies, 36-16. In the Aslans (ages 12-14) Division, Dave Dincola's Bulldogs have won multiple i9 Sports league titles, this time getting by the Colorado Financial Loans Bulls, coached by Cal Mier, 42-32. Also, Rodney Sowal's Vipers beat the Rebels, co-coached by Mark Menefee and Shawn Caldwell, 44-21.
In addition to the football action, more than a dozen very cute youth cheerleaders helped entertain the fans and spurred the flag football players to achieve more on the field. During the season, coach Ashley DeBell and several assistants taught the girls to dance, cheer, tumble, and build pyramids. They also enjoyed snacks and received trophies and medals on the last day.
The i9 Sports fall flag football season and cheerleading program in Golden will commence on Sept. 7. i9 Sports will also host a summer football camp for kids ages 6 to 14 at Drake Middle School in Arvada starting on July 8. For more information, please call 303-462-1520 or go to
