Royal Gorge Skycoaster
Contributed by: Alaine Anselmo on 5/29/2008

The Royal Gorge Skycoaster stands 1,100 feet above the Arkansas River. As you are strapped into the body harness, the adrenaline starts to rush through you. You are taken to the platform where you are hooked by the back to the cables high above you. Then you are told to lean forward over a bar. The bar is abruptly falls away, and you are suspended parallel to the ground. You lock arms with the people at your side as you prepare yourself to be lifted 1,100 feet into the air. As you are waiting for that moment you can see miles into the distance, and the people below look like tiny dots. You are chosen as the lucky person who gets to pull the cord. In a second's time, you are flying arm-in-arm over the river. As you look down, the river appears at first as only a thin little line. You continue to swing, back and forth.

Soon you are swinging slow enough and are calm enough to where you can truly appreciate the beauty that lies below. It is astounding that such a gorge was created. By this time your heart has stopped racing and it is time to get off. The workers reach a pole out to you; you attempt to grab it. You miss. A worker has to jump up and grab your harness. He starts to move with you, getting closer to the edge of the platform. Seeing this almost gives you as much adrenaline as when you were first released. They unbuckle you and take you inside to get the harness off. There you can purchase a DVD of your journey on the Royal Gorge Skycoaster.
