Visit a park or recreation center during National Recreation and Parks Month
July 1, 2005
– Did you know that 75 percent of Americans live within two miles of a public park or recreation facility? Research also shows that more than 75 percent of the population takes advantage of those facilities. That amounts to a staggering 192 million people enjoying parks and participating in recreation annually.
July is Recreation and Parks Month as designated by the National Recreation and Park Association. Since 1985, communities have used the Recreation and Parks Month to get residents involved in recreation, to encourage residents to volunteer on trail and park projects and to let the public know about the benefits of parks and recreation.
Parks comprise one-quarter of the land in Lakewood. There is always something to do at the City’s more than 99 parks, 23 sports fields, seven swimming pools, 16 lakes and reservoirs and more than 36 miles of bicycle trails. Lakewood also has an inline hockey rink, skate park, two golf courses and four recreation centers. Some of the City’s programs in July include:
