So, some students and I, from McLain Community High School in Lakewood, went on a weekend field trip to Colorado Springs. Now, my favorite thing that we did was go to the Cave of the Winds and took the lantern tour.
First, we ran through the main cave but did not see everything. There were cave formations everywhere. It was amazing. So then we get to this little 4-foot door and the tour guide hands us a metal tin lantern with an alcohol wick to burn. The flame was very small -- not much bigger than a lighter -- and we are way into the earth by now! The first thing you have to do is go down a four foot high tunnel for twenty feet.
After that, another one that slightly goes upwards and that seemed to be a little smaller, but this one was one hundred feet long. So we get to the first opening which was massive and the tour guide told us that the man, who used to own the cave, used to put an old Indian mummy in here and charged people to see it. I can't remember the guy's name, but him and his wife would spend most of their time in the cave, even sleeping in this one small chamber. Anyways, we walked through the cave and eventually get to the end, it just kind of got smaller and smaller until you could not go anymore.
We saw so many awesome things but what I liked the most was all the massive chambers. They were just huge and the echoes went for ever, but keep in mind that this cave is not man made at all just the entrance that's all. Stalagmites take one thousand years to grow one inch. Just some fun facts. But anyways, that was my story I hope you enjoyed it, and I really recommend you visit the Cave of the Winds!
