Into the hills
I started working at YourHub.com in October of 2005. Lucky for me I actually live in the area I cover for YourHub.com, which makes me feel a little more in touch with my community and I hope to tell you what that is like and get some feedback. I’ll also let you know what’s going on with me and share some observations about whatever’s on my mind. I might also throw in a book review here or there, although I doubt it will be anything too earth shattering. My hope is to find some other reviewers out there, for books, restaurants, entertainment, etc... Enjoy!

I recently finished the book
Memoirs of a Geisha
by
Arthur Golden
. It was published in 1997. I thought I would take this opportunity and let you know what I thought about it.
Here's a little background for you: The novel is a fictitious, first person account of a geisha working in Japan. Or to be more specific, the book begins when the geisha is about 9 years old and tells the story of how she becomes a geisha and her career henceforth.
I, not having a clue what a geisha was when I began the book, found it to be incredibly interesting. I felt like I learned a lot especially what it was like to be a geisha in Japan before World War II. This book opened my eyes to something I never knew existed. It was interesting to learn how the geisha life and living in a geisha district played a part inJapan's cultural at the time, which I'm sure has some lasting effects today.
Overall, I would recommend the book. I think the book has several strong characters. It was easy to enter the world of a geisha and almost feel the struggles they went through. At first I wondered if this was going to be a difficult task the author undertook, considering he was an American man writing in a first-person voice of a Japanesse woman, but it was a job well done.
I have yet to see the
movie
which came out in late 2005. My plan was to read the book first. I'll probably blog again after I watch the movie to let you know how I thought it compared.
Here's some good
discussion questions
I enjoyed answering after I finished the book.
Here's an
interview
from 1999 with Arthur Golden.
Have you read the book? What did you think about it? What other books have you read recently? I'd love to hear from you and get another reviewer on board!

I just saw this movie last night. Although the movie was quite long (145 minutes) and slow in parts, overall, I enjoyed it. There was good acting, and I appreciated that I didn't have to read subtitles. I feel like I am now a bit more culturally informed about the art of becoming a geisha, not that I'll ever become one, or anything.

So many books, so little time... No, I haven't read it or seen the movie, but it sounds like I should add it to my list.
