Charmaine in the city
I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on
Brendan's List.
Rock on!

There are a few things I learned from some students during the Summer Youth Journalism Day held at Arapahoe Community College on July 27:
1. Kids can have more courage and tenacity than some of the most seasoned journalists.
2. Kids understand community issues better than you think.
3. Always make time for snacks and Red Rover.
With summer nearly over and school just around the corner, it's funny to think that a group of about 50 students ranging from fourth- through eighth-grade would be able to sit through a day of listening to
YourHub.com
journalists talk about news stories and how to give interviews.
But they did. And more than that, they were really pumped about learning the difference between opinion and news, how to listen for important facts in interviews, taking it to the streets and talking to people and transforming those interviews into stories. This daylong event was for students to also learn how to post to
YourHub.com/NextGen
. It's a Web site similar to YourHub.com, but strictly for Colorado students in fourth- through eighth-grade.
I was fortunate enough to lead a group of fifth-graders around ACC's campus so they could have the opportunity to give man-on-the-street interviews. Basically, ask poll-type questions: What do you think about gas prices? What's your favorite Harry Potter book? Do you own any pets and why?

were amazing to work with. Even after a couple hours of going around campus interviewing folks, when other kids were ready for some playtime, they wanted to keep going. They enjoyed talking to people and thought it was really fun. And they cranked out several stories to post on YourHub.com/NextGen.
You should check it out. Their stories are great reads.
