Blog Entry 6 of 45 Random Neural Firings
A data dump of whatever happens to be on my mind at the moment. So fasten your safety belts and clench your buttocks, this is going to be a bumpy ride! I'm a mild-mannered scientist by day, and a raving lunatic at night - and I just might be your neighbor! I grew up (though some say I haven't) in Deer Creek Canyon, in the old Glen Plym Ranch homestead next to What's now known as Deer Creek Mesa. Weekdays I commute to the University of Denver, where I work in atmospheric physics. Weekends I mostly spend trying to remodel the old homestead without ruining its historic character. Seeing as it's made of stone, that would actually be hard to do. Why I'm here, I'm not really sure... Know Thy Neighbor
Contributed by: Kevin Murcray   on 3/10/2006

Back when I was a young boy, wandering all over the countryside of Deer Creek Canyon (due west of Chatfield Reservoir, for those not familiar with it), everyone in the neighborhood knew everyone else. Getting to know the new neighbors was easy, especially when you traveled all over everywhere on foot. After all, new neighbors were a rare and miraculous thing - the first one didn't show up until I was eight years old. They'd show up after that at about the rate of one per year.

Then suddenly everything changed. I got a driver's license for one thing. New neighbors started moving in for another. Suddenly it seemed (and still does) like I'm mostly surrounded by strangers. There's two distinct groups in my classification of my neighbors -
the "old people" and the "New people". I suspect this is true of a lot of the other "old people" in the neighborhood. We that lived here before 1980 all know each other pretty well, having been part of each other's lives for over 25 years. Those that came afterwards are still "new"
neighbors, that we haven't got to know yet.

This is probably more true for me than most my other "old" neighbors, being as I'm much more of a recluse than they. But now I never even meet the new people - we all drive to work and back home, drive to the stores, to friend's houses, distances being what they are when you live in a little enclave of multi-acre lots surrounded by thousands of acres of open space. Sure, that's what we all moved out for in the first place! But still, it would be kinda nice to know the neighbors...

Thanks, Rebecca. I probably won't get too specific about the neighbors, as I don't want to invade their privacy. But I'm sure I'll swear a lot at the house... :>

Great introduction. I can't wait to read and learn more about your ancient house and your neighbors.
