Blog Entry 15 of 18 Parenting..Parenting...Parenting!
Anyone who has been a parent knows that it brings both great rewards and challenging moments. This is my take on the life of being a being a parent, most of that time a single parent.....my struggles, my successes and everything in between.

G.I. Joes and flashlights....
Contributed by: Elina Martinez   on 8/5/2008

It's four in the morning and I am up. I can hear the crickets making that awful noise they make, the one that sounds like someone is working on a bike that is 899 years old. No, I am not going to work, and no I am not going to the gym. In all honesty, I would LOVE to be asleep, but once again I let myself get talked into getting a pet.

No, it's not a cute little hamster that only makes noise when he runs on a wheel. I usually can't hearhim unless I actually listen for the little guy. No, it's not the birds. They, like I wish I were, sleep at night. And no, right now it is not the baby, because even though she is teething and was up until 12:30 (which yes, means I have slept for 3 hours and 20 minutes tonight which is better than last night when I slept a total of ! LOL this time it's man's best friend.

That's right world, I did it. I let myself get talked into getting a puppy. Of course they would take care of him, and walk him daily (which by the way is the best part because my jeans fit so much better with the twice daily 2-mile walk), and feed him, and overall wake up and let him out when he had to go potty at, umm, 4:01 in the morning.

Why might you ask, did I allow myself, the adult to be conned into adding to my plate? Don't I know how much work it is to have a pet? Couldn't I say "honey, let's get a fish". Well, in case you have not been put in this situation, I looked at this big brown eyes of my little boy has ashe pleaded his case as to why he really needed a dog. How all little boys had dogs, and it was downright cruel to make him go without the experience of having his own. How he was the littlest and he never got anything new or just for himself, and how his big brothers are more interested in girls than in playing with him, and I got lost in his reasoning, and it wouldn't of mattered what he was saying, when your kids are passionateabout something, and they just have that look in their eyes, and that tone in thier voice, it forces you to listen, and sometimes give in.

So ... here I am a week later, and up at 4:01. Not because he doesn't love his puppy to death, and won't get up if I go in and wake him. But because when I walk in his room to make him get up and take his dog outside, I see light beaming against the wall that is proof someone did not go right to bed but played with his G.I. Joe's'til he drifted off to dream land. And watching him sleep peacefully is greater than my need at this moment to teach him a lesson. Because I want to see those big brown eyes let me get lost in their reasoning all over again tomorrow and one day he will be gone and I will wish I could watch him sleep just one more time with proof he didn't go to bed but played all night till he fell asleep with the flashlight and G.I.Joe's.
