Blog Entry 14 of 15 Things, news, whatnot
I'm Karen Ward Gilbert, a (former) community journalist here at YourHub.com. In this blog, I may (have written) about current events, the latest happenings at YourHub.com or blather ranging from what I overheard on the bus to my new favorite chocolate bar.

Mary Ann Vogt sure can throw a baby shower
Contributed by: Karen Ward Gilbert/YourHub.com   on 11/8/2006

During a lovely baby shower held Nov. 5, grandmother-to-be Mary Ann Vogt, of Ken Caryl, told me she had hoped she'd get to host the party she planned for her daughter-in-law, Annie Vogt, of Denver, before the baby was born.

We had a laugh about cutting it close since Annie was due in three weeks.

Well, cut it close she did. Nov. 5 turned out to be the actual birthday of my not-at-all-related "niece."

My good friend and former University of Wyoming (and then later city of Denver) roommate was due to deliver her first baby - sex unknown - Nov. 30.

Annie predicted the baby would be a week or two late (as both she and her sister were late - and to be honest, timeliness has never been Annie's forte).

In fact, the entire Vogt family, along with Annie's family Jim, Diane and Molly Jokerst, all placed monetary bets on the baby's birth date, the sex and how much the baby would weigh.

Baby foiled every last bet and I'm pretty sure that means she wins the money -- well done little girl, off to a good start. Smart, this one.

During the brunch held on West Hinsdale Avenue, baby decided she'd had enough of hearing about the adorable non-sex specific yellow and green themed-gifts and it was time to see them for herself. Or, it was at least time to demand something pink.

Thus, in the midst of baby gift opening, Annie's water broke.

A few minutes later, her exact words to me were, "Hey Ward, I think my water broke." She then proceeded to provide other details, which I will omit here.

She and daddy-to-be Andrew Vogt called their doctor who advised them to get to the hospital. The couple then posed for some photos, bid the party attendees adieu and headed downtown to St. Josephs.

This was around 2 p.m.

By nearly 5 p.m., I hadn't heard any news. I called Molly and she too, hadn't heard any news and was unable to reach Andrew by cell phone. Naturally Molly and Diane were beside themselves and attempting to distract each other with shopping wasn't working.

Molly called the hospital desperate for news and luckily was patched directly to Annie's room. Andrew informed her Annie was in active labor.

I headed to the hospital waiting room around 7 p.m.

I joined Jim, Diane, Molly and Mary Ann, along with grandpa-to-be Tom Vogt, and aunts-to-be Connie Torres and Janine Vogt.

After hours of text-messaging, half-watching TV and railing about how sick of political ads we all had become, Andrew emerged from the delivery room.

He was unable to speak with words but managed to communicate they had a girl. With his fingers, he displayed a "six" and then a "nine" -- she weighed six pounds nine ounces. Healthy. Good.

Then the tears came. And lots of 'em.

Probably 20 minutes or so later, we -- the mob who the hospital staff had learned to avoid making eye-contact with -- were allowed to see Annie and the baby.

I followed Andrew's example and became unable to speak. Also, I couldn't stop crying and it was getting embarrassing.

The baby was so tiny and sweet. Her little eyes were very blinky and under her little lavender cap was a head full of black hair. She had the quietest little cry I had ever heard. I didn't know babies were capable of such quiet wails -- no wonder we couldn't hear her when we were out in the hall snooping around.

After family members snapped some photographs and we all fawned over the baby, I gave Annie's hand about a half-dozen squeezes and bid many "congratulations" and made my way to the door.

Honestly, I can't wait to get the baby a little something pink.
