Blog Entry 7 of 46 Paul Hughes: Genius
I'm a slow burn that needs repeated readings. If you're a fan of my work, I'll send you a dollar, because I'm not above bribery to keep you coming back for more. Thank you...

Those pesky guilty pleasures
Contributed by: paul hughes   on 4/2/2007

Let's just get this out of the way right now...

We all have guilty pleasures. What constitutes a guilty pleasure? One man's trash is another man's treasure right? Is it the circles we run in? Friends are usually the biggest offenders when clowning you because you decide to throw in Poison's greatest hits instead of the new Wilco album. I've done my share of clowning...well it's my modus operandi. Call me an elitist snob, I don't care. I relish the title. You would also be 100 percent when I say that this is the case of the pot calling the kettle black. I'm not without vices/lame choices/laughable selection/bad taste.

Here for you enjoyment, are things in life that I may or may not sit in the dark, door locked, all alone or at the embarrassment of others and indulge in.

MOVIES

"Stick It or "Pure Country"

First let me start with "Stick It". Starz has been showing this movie it seems like 4 times a day. Jeff "It really tied the room together" Bridges( If you can guess the quote, I owe you a beer, but if you think about it, it's very simple...so never mind) Beau's brother, plays a gymnastics coach who takes on a troubled teen who just happens to be one of the most insanely talented gymnasts ever(you know this because they tell you). But this girl is a rebel, how? Well she sports Black Flag and Bad Brains T-shirts...so yeah, she's a rebel. Everyone hates the rebel, she shows her soft side, everyone comes to love the rebel, and they fight the system blah, blah. I can't stop watching it. For a guy who makes it a point to talk about how good foreign cinema is/clowns "studio pictures", this movie is a big no-no. I've watched it 3 times this week. Now Pure Country, this came out about 14 years ago and George Straight, who's a country singer in real life, really stretches himself in this movie and plays a country singer. He's tired of the money and fame, and screaming fans/backstage Betty's; so he leaves it behind to go work on a farm and fall in love. My first job was working at a movie theater and when I started, this movie was playing, so during my breaks I would go in and watch this and clown it, but secretly I was enjoying every minute. If you get a few drinks in me, I might just sing you "Heartland" one of George's original songs for the movie. If you feel the need to see what I'm talking about, it's on CMT quite a bit, usually followed by George Straight, live at the Astrodome, which I've watched, just to hear "Heartland". I'll save the stories of my friend Dave and I taking at least 15 minutes of every phone conversation to talk about Jean Claude Van Damme for another time.

MUSIC

Dave Matthews Band-Yes, he's hugely popular and lots of people love the guy, openly so, but I come from a world where if you're not talking about the Cold War Kids album or that Jeff Tweedy solo show...Dave doesn't come up...ever. Mr. Matthews is a poor songwriter but I will acquiesce my hipster ways at the door to bust out "Crash" or "Don't Drink the Water" when I'm sitting in my house. I completely stopped listening to Dave a couple of years back, but last Christmas, I was driving my sisters car to the Chapel Hills Mall in lovely Colorado Springs and she had his greatest hits in her CD changer; I listened to it, sang out loud when no other cars where around and reminisced about how much fun his concerts where (well except when he busts out one of his lengthy jam sessions). My girlfriend M laughs at me when it comes to Mr. Matthews but she paid to see Kiss live...so I still have an edge (Another story for another time is how we met...at a Kiss/Aerosmith show circa 3 years ago...my ticket was free in case you were wondering... I only went because my friend...I know, there no easy way to hipster my way out of this, but it really is an amazingly weird story...another time)

FOOD

Ketchup on my rice...

Yep, that just screams straight from the trailer and I was born in Virginia, but I add a dollop of ketchup on my rice...well a little more than a dollop. Any kind of rice will do. Every time M and I go out to eat and I order rice as my side, she'll ask the waiter/waitress for ketchup. It's her way of clowning me. I don't do it restaurants; it's a home alone sacred ritual.

Tortilla's (Mission Brand) straight from the package...

I eat these constantly. I always wonder why I always have and odd number of tortillas in my pack of 8 or wonder why I have 2 left when I bought the package 4 days ago. I always grab one and eat it... no salsa, no cheese...plain, and it's usually before I sit down to eat my actual meal. This may be a subconscious thing going back to college. Me and my roommate used to buy tortillas by the truckload and make quesadillas like we worked in a Quesadilla only restaurant. But when I was drunk or perhaps smoked cigarettes of the illegal kind, I would start eating tortillas...plain. I guess it was healthier than rolling to Albertacos at 2 in the morning, which I did my fair share of as well...another time.

BOOKS

Don't really have a bad one here...pretty sound on my end. Does the Playmate of the Month bios count? I really don't care about the pictures anymore since the internet offers up better quality at discount prices, so I read the bios. Quite informative...I've found that I'm a perfect match every month in the "what I look for in a guy" category.
