I think of my children
Contributed by: Travis Henry/YourHub.com   on 4/17/2007

Columbine. 9/11. Yesterday.

When horrific acts remind us of what a violent world we live in my first thoughts always turn to my children.

Lauren is turning into a beautiful young woman who is at that awkward age where she is not quite a teen, not quite a young child. Her intelligence is beyond her 12 years, yet she is still innocent and thankfully naive enough to enjoy the simple experiences of childhood.

Joel is beginning his first year of baseball. He wants to be just like Babe Ruth, except for the part "where he smokes cigars." My 7-year-old boy is mischievous and sensitive while looking at the world with a wonder and curiosity I wish I still had.

Alexander is four months old. My wife and I get the greatest joys out of his simple smiles. My heart absolutely melted when I made him laugh for the first time the other day.

During Columbine and 9/11 I was a daily newspaper reporter and when the events happened I could distract myself by covering the story. I didn't have much time in the early days of each tragedy to reflect too long on how the events personally affected me.

Columbine was in our back yard and it seemed every reporter in the state was covering some aspect of it. In the early hours of 9/11, I was sent to Rocky Flats and Denver. No one was sure what we were dealing with. It wasn't until weeks after Columbine, days after 9/11 that I could take some time to deal with my personal feelings. I almost preferred it that way.

I am somewhat more removed from yesterday's events. The only person I know in Virginia is Steve Hemphill, the assistant sports editor for the Roanoke Times.

Yet, I think I feel this one more. At least, the feeling is more immediate. I watch in horror and can't imagine what the parents of those students are now going through.

Some day I will have to let my children go. Some day I will have to ship these kids off to college.

And that's what scares the hell out of me.

I certainly expect my kids to go to school, today, tomorrow because it is their job, just like going to the Thornton Family Chiropractic is my job. Because there are a few "weird", "wigged-out", "strange" people is another reason to be vigilant in our everyday lives. Be observant of yours and others behavior. Don't be afraid to assert yourself in any situation, because the situation may require it. What I don't understand is the FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real)? Are there things beyond our control? Yes, but if we trust in our abilities to adapt to our environment, the Spirit of God will unfold life's events as to the divine plan intended.

Travis - I agree with you. IT is amazing how much we can block out as we immerse ourselves in painful situations. My own involvement eight years ago and the subsequest loss of our daughter has left me a changed person. These words are easy to write, but their intensity is difficult to convey. Since Sarah died, I struggle every day to get out of bed. I know that if I did not have Mike, Ty and now Catherine, geting out of bed may have been a moot point for me, as I'm not so sure I would have chosen to hang around. As parents we should be concerned. I hate that my kids' lives aren't really within my control. All we can do is be so incredibly devoted to them that they are our sole reason for being. And keep gettign out of bed to do it all over again the next day.
