Laura Marrs candidate for KCRMD board
Contributed by: Laura Marrs on 4/9/2008

Editor's note: Voters will be electing three members to the Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District Board of Directors on May 6. YourHub.com asked the candidates running to answer a questionnaire to get to know them better. more candidate profiles and information on the election, click here. Here's what candidate Laura Marrs had to say:

My name: Laura Marrs

My age: 39

My Family: My family consists of my husband Hugh, Katie (9 years old), Danny (8 years old), and Jack ( 6 years old).

Education:BS Nursing

What I do: I am a stay at home mom who also works part time for the Arc in Denver as an educational advocate and and event coordinator

My favorite place in town to hang out: I love to hang out with the neighborhood ladies, playing bunco, discussing a good book, or just eating an unusual meal.

What I like most about living here: My favorite thing about Ken Cary is the closeness of the community. This neighborhood has a small-town atmosphere that is replicated in other parts of metro Denver.

My interests and hobbies: I love to read.

My favorite thing to cook: My favorite thing to cook is any take out my husband brings home.

People who inspire me (and how): I'm inspired daily by children with seeming insurmountable challenges, rise above them. I watch these beautiful children and their families take joy in every accomplishment and not obsess over things they can't control.

How I have contributed to the community: I have had the pleasure of serving as the President of the Ken Caryl Parent Network and also on the board of directors for The Arc in Jefferson County, The Autism Society of Colorado, and Jeffco First Steps.

The biggest issues facing KCRMD now: While it would seem the biggest issue for the new board of the Metropolitan District would be economical, that will be resolved one way or the other before any one of us would start serving our term The long term effects of the campaign for or against A&B will be felt long after May 6th. I have significant concerns that the "win at all costs" attitude I have seen from supporters of both sides of the A&B issue facing the Ken Caryl voters in May. If we continue down this path there will be fissures created in our neighborhood that we will not be able to bridge after the election. I have seen comments in email's from supporters of both sides of the A&B issue that make me cringe. We need to remember we are all neighbors first, and we need to put politics second. When we first moved here, it struck my husband, Hugh, and I how close knit this community is. I would argue the small town feelin g that exists here would be our most valuable asset, not our open space. This is a community that closes ranks and supports it's members when they are going through hard times. We need to remind those who are working so hard for both sides of A&B, their job is to provide information so we voters may make an informed choice.

Why I am running: I am running because we have lost sight of the fact we are all neighbors first. When the business of the neighborhood is conducted in such a way that you begin to avoid people at block parties and the pools, something needs to change. When discussing politics, two intelligent people can look at the same fact pattern and come to completely different conclusions. My goal is to ensure all opinions are valued and a disagreement today doesn't taint a voice permanently.
