Sound off: The Ken-Caryl community needs you
Contributed by: Alison Evans on 4/14/2008

Dear Ken-Caryl Ranch neighbor and resident:

Despite what you may have heard, your community needs you - now.

Most of us chose to live in Ken-Caryl Ranch because of the amenities - open space, quiet, pools, tennis, equestrian center, parks, and recreational opportunities.

Our amenities are aged or in disrepair. The "no" vote in November on 5A started the process of closing pools and putting even more amenities at risk. Another "no" vote in May will close one pool and put increasingly greater stress on a chronically underfunded budget.

Community investment makes our neighborhoods vibrant. It enhances our property values. It makes Ken-Caryl Ranch the place others want to move to. If we don't do anything, today's cuts will only be the first of many - and will have an increasingly destructive impact on our community.

Because the Ken-Caryl Ranch Metro District (KCRMD) no longer has the financial means to maintain our community, it is critical we pass the A and B ballot. Unfortunately, you will likely be subjected to an onslaught of anti-KCR rhetoric.

You'll hear that the KCRMD's management is poor and wasteful. That simply is untrue.

You'll hear that just a little "brown grass", just a few less classes, shorter hours won't hurt anyone. To the contrary, if there is anything we should not consider doing, it's less. Our property values depend on it. More importantly, it's why so many of us moved here in the first place.

You'll hear there is a "better way" to take care of our community, although we have not heard what that better way might be.

And finally, you'll hear complaints about lawyers and legal fees. Legal fees are less than 2% of the KCR budget. Nearly 50% of the expenditures in the past two years are to DEFEND our community. Ken-Caryl Ranch was sued. Some of those who want to cut legal expenses in the name of reducing the budget actually benefit if KCRMD loses because it cannot afford a proper defense. We think a case should be judged on its merits - not derailed by gutting community funding.

As your neighbors, we ask you to help keep your community vibrant. A "yes" vote on A and B tells the opposition to leave your neighborhoods, and community, alone.

Please, vote YES on A & B
