Vote yes on A&B to ward off declining enrollment
Contributed by: Mary Jane Furgason on 4/14/2008

Dear Editor,

I've served as Bradford's PTA president for two years and have been very involved in the schools and the community.

I wanted to offer another perspective on the mill-levy issue. After seeing steady enrollment numbers for kindergarten students, ranging from 100-120 per year, next year's kindergarten enrollment is down almost 30 percent. I hope this is a temporary dip; if not, our schools could be in serious trouble. Declining enrollment endangers our luxury of having two campuses. Jefferson County wouldn't hesitate to house Bradford in one building if our numbers consistently decrease over the next few years.

What can you do to make a difference? This may seem like a strange correlation, but vote yes on A and B. The majority of families who look at homes in this area have school-aged children and amenities are important. Perks such as access to pools and tennis courts - not to mention availability of open space and recreational opportunities make one neighborhood more saleable than another. These amenities are standard in new communities today and Ken-Caryl needs to offer the same opportunities to be able to compete.

New families mean new students. If A & B fail this time around our amenities suffer and as a result, we could face even lower numbers of school children at our schools. If a school closes due to low enrollment, the whole neighborhood suffers.

Vote yes on A & B.
