Blog Entry 33 of 44 Welcome to The Retroplex
I'm usually in full-blown reminisce mode anyway, so why not make the rest of you poor saps suffer along with me, right?

Here, you'll find no shortage (well...unless I can't think of any new material) of meaningless but ultimately harmless bits of ephemera covering the past 20 or so years of pop culture, and my occasional interactions with it. Whether you're into the iconic or the ironic, sooner or later, I'll probably get around to it.
Watch, as the hilarity ensues! Or, if you prefer, gawk like a shocked passerby witnessing a horrible accident!

Shoot your friends - all in fun, of course...

So, one of my most prized possessions as a kid was my original, Worlds of Wonder-made Lazer Tag set. I saved a year's worth of birthday and Christmas cash, and plunked down $39 at Target for a shiny new Starlyte and Starsensor. I dreamt of tournaments like those seen in the very first Lazer Tag commercial, where teams of athletes who bore uncanny resemblances to A Flock of Seagulls and various MTV VeeJays cartwheeled, ran, and jumped around a Mad Max-ish landscape of claustrophobic chaos. Unfortunately, my turn in the arena would never arrive, as I was, in fact, the only one of my friends who had a set. One-man Lazer Tag isn't a great deal of fun, my friends.

OK. So, you run over there with this sensor-thing, and, uh...I'll...uh, shoot at you.

You can pick up working Lazer Tag sets on eBay for around $30, in most cases, and I still have mine. So, go grab one, drop me a line, and maybe we can get a tournament put together yet. I don't think I've got a jumpsuit that'll fit, though...

We did like to blast away at each other back in the day, didn't we? Here are a few of the other entries into the "off your buddies"-lines offered back before cap guns had to be painted orange, and Ahnuld was too busy with pending legislation to pull of the John Matrix act:

Photon - Lazer Tag's awkward, D&D-playing cousin
Entertech water guns - squirt guns real enough to get you Tased!
The most manly entry of all!!

Karin - wow! I want one of those sets right now. It's 85 degrees in my office, and the water spray feature would be sweeeeeeeet. No, Brendan, I've just felt the pressing nudge of guilt for ignoring this blog for too long; so long, in fact, that I've been de-listed. Nooooo!

One of MY most prized possessions as a kid was a Robin (as in Batman and Robin) suit my mom made for me. But, that was pre-80's more like mid-70's.......Aaah well, memories are memories after all.

My kids had a version of lazer tag where you hit the target on their chest plate, releasing water inside. It was a cool combination of squirt guns and lazer tag. When it worked, that is.

Yes! Did you write up a bunch of these over the past few months and just decide to post them now, or what? This is amazing.
