Blog Entry 34 of 44 Welcome to The Retroplex
I'm usually in full-blown reminisce mode anyway, so why not make the rest of you poor saps suffer along with me, right?

Here, you'll find no shortage (well...unless I can't think of any new material) of meaningless but ultimately harmless bits of ephemera covering the past 20 or so years of pop culture, and my occasional interactions with it. Whether you're into the iconic or the ironic, sooner or later, I'll probably get around to it.
Watch, as the hilarity ensues! Or, if you prefer, gawk like a shocked passerby witnessing a horrible accident!

Cultural icons - on drugs
Contributed by: Jared Keller   on 7/23/2007

The 80s - like any other decade - featured their share of pivotal pop culture moments that would eventually become part of something akin to a shared national memory of the period. During the 80s, as you may recall, First Lady Nancy Reagan kicked off her "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign, and pretty soon, kids across the country began to be told of the evils of narcotics. Everybody from Nancy McKeon to the Thundercats was involved in the PSA world, and here are a few of the more notable.

Your brain - over-easy
This ad, of course, kicked off the wave of anti-drug PSAs that roared through the era. Was it effective? Who knows. I was pretty secure in my loathing of drugs before this ad ever surfaced, so in my case, they were merely preaching to the choir, so to speak. I'd guess that the campaign was probably less-than effective within its target audience, too, in that it probably only exacerbated an already nasty case of the munchies.

Lion-O just says no
Sure, this one's about alcohol abuse, but it's just too good to pass up.

Pee-Wee's Crackhouse
There is absolutely nothing I can say to fully illustrate the creepiness of this ad. Nothing. Nothing at all. I won't even try. Not a little bit.

I remember seeing an '80s crack PSA in the movie theater and thinking it looked more like an advertisement, sort of like when the newspaper reports a deadly incarnation of heroin, it increases popularity. The target audience says, "Whoa. If it can kill you, it must be really good stuff."
